PROCLAMATION

A PROCLAMATION TO RECOGNIZE BRENDA WOODS FOR HER OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO VAN BUREN COUNTY; HER DIRECTOR LEADERSHIP TO VAN BUREN COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL PROVIDES FREE TUTORING FOR ADULTS USING TRAINED VOLUNTEERS TO TEACH BASIC READING WRITING, AND MATH.

WHEREAS:      Mission Statement: The Van Buren County Literacy Council improves the live of adults and families by teaching basic literacy and math skills; enabling them to reach their full potential and goals as they relate to family, the workplace, and their communities.

WHEREAS:      The Van Buren County Literacy Council was incorporated in February, 1990 and received 501 (c) (3) status in February 1991. The Literacy Council has served Van Buren County for over 24 years.

WHEREAS:      The director of the council is the only paid part-time employee (16 hours weekly)There are 10 Board members, 25 volunteers presently the council services, and approx 32 students and 15 trained tutors working with students, most one on one, and a few classes. Training is free. When Brenda assumed the director’s jobs there were 4 students and 2 trained volunteers.

WHEREAS:      Statistic shows that there are approximately 2,500 adults in Van Buren County who have low literacy skills.

WHEREAS:      Students are not charged for any tutoring, all textbooks, reading books, workbooks, and other education materials are supplied to the students and tutors free of charge.

WHEREAS:      The Literacy Council is funded only by grants, donations, and fundraisers.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROGER HOOPER, VAN BUREN COUNTY JUDGE,by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim, on behalf of Van Buren County, our gratitude and sincere appreciation to Brenda Woods for her service and efforts to promote the literacy skills of Van Buren County citizens that makes Van Buren County a better place to live; past, present, and future.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I Set my hand here-unto and caused the Great Seal of Van Buren County to be official this 17th day of July, in the year our Lord 2014.
