Sid King AND The Angel Tree Project Volunteers

 

PROCLAMATION

A PROCLAMATION TO RECOGNIZE SID KING FOR HIS EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO VAN BUREN COUNTY THAT KEEPS US INFORMED AND HELPS PROMOTE VAN BUREN COUNTY.

WHEREAS: Sid King has been involved in the broadcasting and entertainment business since 1977 (37) years. Sid established the first radio station serving Van Buren County and the North Central Arkansas region. Sid and his wife Judy came to Clinton as a newly married couple and raised their family in Van Buren County.

WHEREAS: The radio stations keep Van Buren County informed during times of severe weather, and many times Sid gets up in the middle of the night and personally comes to the radio station to broadcast weather updates. He has been noted on several occasions to stay at the radio station to keep us informed and sleeps there between different weather warnings. Sid keeps Van Buren County residents informed of business and school closings. In addition, Sid has broadcast High School Sports for several years both live and recorded.

WHEREAS: Sid's programming helps improve commerce within the community. The Trading Post Program is on for 1 hour- 6 days a week to promote local sales. The program has sold everything from airplanes to houses and chickens. The Community Bulletin Board keeps the residents informed of upcoming events. Sid also owned the local movie theater for 37 years and his wife Judy has owned a local dance studio for the same amount of years.

WHEREAS: Sid's most unique experience was his coverage of the Titan II missile explosion in 1980. Most recently Sid was featured in the book "Command and Control" and was interviewed by Dutch TV about those experiences. Sid is also going to be in an upcoming documentary by the PBS and BBC on this subject.

WHEREAS: Sid has been professionally recognized as the Exhibitor of the year for the Tri-State Region and served on the Arkansas Broadcaster Association for several years during the 1990's. He was one of the original Clinton Optomist Club founders in the 1980's.

WHEREAS: Sid has used his own radio resource to fund Toys for Christmas, Scotland, tornado, and most recently the April 27, 2014 Faulkner Co. tornado.

WHEREAS: Sid has used the KGFL / KHPQ Jambulance to promote grand openings, parades, fund raising events, and election updates.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROGER W. HOOPER, VAN BUREN COUNTY JUDGE, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim, on behalf of Van Buren County, our gratitude and sincere appreciation to Sid King for his service and efforts to make Van Buren County a better place to live; past, present and future.

PROCLAMATION

A PROCLAMATION TO RECOGNIZE THE ANGEL TREE PROJECT THAT HAS SERVED VAN BUREN COUNTY FOR OVER 30 YEARS. THE ANGEL TREE VOLUNTEERS HAVE HELPED FAMILIES IN NEED IN VAN BUREN COUNTY DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. THIS ORGANIZATION PROVIDES FAMILIES IN NEED IN VAN BUREN COUNTY NOT ONLY GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON BUT HELPS SHOW THE COMPASSION AND UNITY IN OUR COUNTY. THE ANGEL TREE PROJECT HAS SURVIVED FOR 30 YEARS BECAUSE OF THE DEDICATION OF VOLUNTEERS AND THE GENEROSITY OF THE VAN BUREN COUNTY RESIDENTS.

WHEREAS: JoNell Warren and Debbie Whillock started the program because of a family's need in their church over 30 years ago. The program grew to a community program with financial and volunteer help of the Clinton Optimist Club. This continued later with help from DHS providing family needs assessment; JoNell and Debbie with the help of many volunteers; continue to purchase all the gifts, wrapping, and distributions.

WHEREAS: In 2009, The Clinton Chamber of Commerce took over the responisbilities of the Angel Tree Project, heade up by Carrie Hinds and Kathy Sherwood. Today, Carrie Hinds and Trish Childers head up the Agnel Tree Project with the help of the Clinton Chamber board and volunteers to handle all the sign ups, purchasing, wrapping, and distribution of gifts.

WHEREAS: 2001 was the first years the number of families served reached over 700. The average has been 700 to 750 every year since.

NOW, THEREFORE, I , ROGER W. HOOPER, VAN BUREN COUNTY JUDGE, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim, on behalf of Van Buren County, our gratitude and sincere appreciation to the Angel Tree Project volunteers for their promotion of goodwill, unity, and service that makes Van Buren County a great place to live.
